The Anger Workbook

by Dr. Les Carter & Dr. Frank Minirth

Step 3. Let go of excessive dependencies so your anger management is inwardly directed rather than externally determined.

Feeling Unloved Breeds Dependency

All human share a trait that becomes a problem when love needs go unment. It is the trait of dependency. Dependency allows inner thoughts and emotions to be dictated by external circumstances. When our needs for love are balanced we are less dependent, but when our love needs are unmet our dependencies increase, making us more vulnerable to anger.

To determine your tendencies toward dependency, check the appropriate following statements that apply to you:

While speaking to others I wonder if I am saying things the right way.

When someone else is disagreeable, I tend to become edgy and disagreeable too.

I hide my flaws from others because maintaining a good image is important to me.

I become guarded If I am with a strong-willed person.

Sometimes I adjust my behavior because I know it will make me more popular, at least for awhile.

I make plans to feel composed, but those plans are easily altered when others are tense.

When someone disagrees with me I try to convince him or her of my point of view.

I become impatient if I have to let someone complete a project differently from the way I would do it.

I can lose sight of my good intentions if someone acts incompetently.

I have a real need to be accepted by others.
